Counselling in Inverurie

Counselling and psychotherapy are important tools in the care and maintenance of mental health and wellness and my company name was inspired by a client who aptly described therapy as ‘mechanics for the mind!’. At times, everyone can benefit from some ‘fine tuning’ of their thoughts or emotions and I can help you do this by providing a safe and collaborative space to explore them, allowing you to make sense of and heal difficult experiences and emotions.

Over many years I have gained extensive experience with a wide range of mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, depression, stress, trauma, bereavement as well as expertise in the emotional aspects of disordered eating.

I have a particular interest in working with trauma and, along with more traditional approaches to trauma treatment, I offer Rewind therapy which is an effective and comfortable treatment for treating PTSD and phobias. The advantage of this method of treatment is that you do not have to share any of the details with me which can be really difficult for some trauma survivors. Provided you can bring the event to mind we can work with it safely and effectively.

In addition to individual counselling I also offer relationship counselling to help couples improve their relationships and have also completed SANDS specialist bereavement training in pregnancy and baby loss.

In our work together I will take an integrated approach with therapy, calling on a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to suit your needs and individual personality - I strongly believe that regardless of the approach used, it is the strength of the therapeutic relationship that is the key to recovery and aim to provide a safe, supportive and connected space for you to explore your issues and experiences.

Together we will work to enable you to develop new perspectives and new ways of thinking to achieve the differences you want and creating the life you want for yourself.

Why do people come to counselling?

They come to:

• Gain clarity and perspective of the problems they are facing

Help them to find their own solutions to the problems they are facing

• Give them the space to be themselves and to be open and honest about the way they truly feel

• Help them to develop their own self-concept so that they are more capable of making their own decisions rather than looking to the ‘so-called’ experts in their lives, to tell them what to do.

• Discover more about themselves and become self-aware

• Help them to accept themselves and accept others

• Help them to determine what is not working in their lives and support them in relinquishing limiting beliefs and behaviours

• Help them to put closure on the past

• Help them to perceive or respond to things differently so they feel able to communicate their feelings to those they love, more effectively

• Help them deal with issues from the past that are stopping them from moving forward

About me

I’m Dr Susan Murray and my interest in people and caring for their well-being initially began with a career in nursing in the NHS. I worked firstly with children and adults with learning disabilities and later, in general wards at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Life then took me down a different path and I worked and co-directed a business in the oil-related private sector for a number of years, gaining a wider knowledge of people and life along the way. My interest in counselling and psychology grew initially from facing some personal challenges of my own and was subsequently fuelled by my desire to empower others to take more control of their own well-being so they can live the lives they want and be the best version of themselves they can be. Now, as a counsellor with over 20 years experience, I have complemented my skills by completing an MA in Psychology and later a PhD in Health Behaviour Change at the University of Aberdeen.

At home, I have a grown up family, step-children and grand-children and have experienced all the trials, tribulations, joy and lessons that combining families can bring. In my spare time I enjoy walking my dogs, gardening, travelling and spending time with my husband and family.

Location

I offer counselling and psychotherapy services either in-person, or if you prefer, remotely online or by telephone. My practice is conveniently based in the popular market town of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire and is easily accessible by road, rail (3 min. walk from railway station) or bus from the surrounding areas including Aberdeen, Dyce, Kintore, Kemnay, Oldmeldrum, Ellon and Huntly.

Fees

Sessions last an hour and I offer a reduced fee for our first meeting as an opportunity to find out if we 'fit'. I think finding the 'right' counsellor is a bit like shopping for new shoes - you may have to try out a few to find out which are the most comfortable and that's ok!

Your recovery towards a pleasurable life depends on finding a therapist you can connect with and trust so I want you to feel comfortable and not under pressure when we meet for the first time.

Fee for 1st session is £40, non-refundable and payable in advance.

Subsequent sessions are £75 payable at time of appointment by cash, card or bank transfer. Note that if you want to cancel a booked session I require 48 hours notice, otherwise you will still need to pay for any sessions missed.

I also provide a limited number of concession spaces for NHS or low-income clients as I strongly believe therapy should be available to all regardless of income, please email me to enquire about availability.
